In 2009, with Mr. Smith’s 100th birthday approaching, it was decided that the truck needed to be restored. With very little work, the truck was started and driven onto the lowboy for the ride to the body shop. After 2+ months of body work and painting by Southern Blast ‘n’ Reconditioning in Monroe, NC, the truck was returned to Cheraw to be lettered and have a little more engine work.
On October 14, 2009, the truck was presented to Mr. Smith as a part of his 100th birthday celebration. While the truck runs well enough to be moved around the yard (including the mixer), our mechanics will continue to work on the truck so that it can be driven in parades and other events around the community.
Thank you to all of those who had a hand in making this restoration possible!
Frequently Asked Questions:
Q: Why is it #2 and not #1 if it was the first truck?
A: #1 was Mr. Smith’s company car.
Q: Is the mixer still operational?
A: Yes. The motor is not currently mounted, but with a small modification, a motor was placed on the chasis and the mixer still turns.
